EP – 157 Discussing Grief

Brittany Johns joins our conversation this week to discuss the important topic of grief. Brittany has worked in the healthcare industry for over 13 years and is certified in grief counseling. She runs and operates New Beginnings Grief Recovery in Bend, Oregon.

During our conversation, we talked about what grief is and is not. An important area for grandparents and parents to understand is that grief with children doesn’t always show up as it does with adults. Although everyone grieves differently, children are sometimes prone to sudden bursts of emotion and what can sometimes seem strange statements. Brittany does a great job of explaining how grief in a child can be expressed and how, as grandparents, we can help them navigate their feelings and their processing of a loss.

We also talk about how, as grandparents, it is essential to be honest with grandchildren about the loss of someone, a pet, or any loss. Grieving, as Brittany explained, isn’t just about someone close to us passing away. That sense of loss can be about a move, a change in living circumstances, or anything really that causes a disruption to our lives that will not be returning to us. It is essential to recognize the loss, and that is where a grief counselor, in particular, can be helpful to us or our grandchildren to come to terms with and process the change that is either happening now or that will occur in the future.

Once you have listened to this episode, please remember to share it with three friends or family members who would benefit from listening to Brittany’s wisdom.
