EP – 113 Grandfamilies

Our Conversation with Dr. Glenda Clare

Dr. Glenda Clare is an expert on Grandparents raising Grandchildren. We jump into the conversation, talking about the differences between multigenerational homes and Grandfamilies. Dr. Glenda Clare and I also discuss some of the “Ds” that cause Grandparents to take over daily care of raising Grandchildren. Some of those “Ds” are:

  • DRUGS
  • DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
  • DETENTION
  • DIVORCE
  • DEPLOYMENT
  • DISSERTATION
  • DEPORTATION
  • DISABILITY

We also address what support is and is not available for Grandparents who are taking on the raising of their Grandchildren. One of the most significant areas that Grandparents need who are raising their Grandchildren is to create a connection with them.

Grandparents need little acts of kindness and to know who they can rely on for support with babysitting, running errands, and, most importantly, just being an ear that a Grandparent can use to vent to, bounce ideas off of, AND know that someone cares about their situation.
