EP – 171 Creative Thinking with Dan Miller

This is somewhat of a ‘Bonus’ or repeat episode. This episode is a conversation that I had with Dan Miller, author of the book 48 Days To The Work and Life You Love. I start this conversation with a few thoughts about Dan and his 48 Days Community’s influence on me and my relationship with my children. I also share some of my intentions about using some of the books that Dan talks about with my grandchildren to help them think creatively about education, making a living, and, most importantly, life in general. I hope you enjoy this replay of my fun conversation with Dan in 2021.

Dan Miller joins us for a fantastic conversation about how we, as grandfathers, can help our grandchildren think creatively about education, work, and life. Learn about Dan’s experience and expectations when he learned he would become a grandfather. Dan was excited and viewed the grandchildren as an extension of the fun and exciting times he and his wife, Joanne, had with their children.

Our discussion then focuses on helping grandchildren learn to hold on to their creativity and passions from childhood to adulthood. We discuss how Dan’s family has used the game CASH FLOW as one of the fun activities to help the grandchildren think about creating long-term and lasting wealth.

We also talk about using mentors when modeling roles such as being a husband, father, and grandfather. There are many resources available to learn these roles that we take on. Dan and I also talk about how grandfathers or men of the same age group can help reframe experiences that our grandchildren and other youth have. We can help them to think differently about opportunities and find ways to find work that is meaningful, purposeful, AND profitable for them.

Dan talks to us about connecting with the grandchildren on their level and with their interests. By meeting the grandchildren where they are, we help them grow in how they are ‘bent’ or created, not how their parents or we want them to be. By joining our grandchildren in activities they enjoy, we as grandparents can learn from them.

Check out the links below for resources to help you be a Cool Grandpa AND help your grandchildren think creatively about life and work. As always, if you enjoyed this conversation, please share this episode with three friends or family members who would enjoy hearing Dan’s wisdom.
