EP – 125 Managing Worry with Grandchildren

Our monthly one-on-one call

The Cool Grandpa Podcast

This month’s one-on-one conversation is about helping our grandchildren manage stress. Regarding stress, I know that as grandpas, we have all had our share. Some of us have learned to deal with stress well, and some haven’t. I think I am in between managing it well and having complete freakouts at other times.

No matter how you deal with stress, as grandfathers, I think that we have a great opportunity to help our grandchildren learn to manage stress. Heck, I wish I had someone in my elementary and middle-school years who could have taught me some coping strategies for dealing with stress.

I am reading Dale Carnegie‘s book, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. This book is one of the first and what I would call a foundational book that deals with managing stress. It certainly has concepts that other modern authors discuss when it comes to stress management. The five tools that Dale Carnegie lays out and explains in greater depth are:

  • Define the problem or worry.
  • What information do we have about the problem?
  • What are all the possible outcomes of the problem we are facing?
  • What action can be taken?
  • Evaluate your activity and adjust as needed.

We can use these steps to work with our grandchildren to help them plan a course of action and then take responsibility for their response to whatever the stress is that they are dealing with. One of the biggest issues that cause anxiety is not feeling like you are in control of the circumstances that you find yourself in.

As grandfathers, we can use this process to help out grandchildren regardless if we are remote or sitting at the kitchen table with them. Helping our grandchildren learn to manage worry and stress is one of the best things that we can do as mentors with our grandchildren. You don’t have to be perfect in managing your stress, but your calming influence and life experience are just what they need from you.

After you have listened to this episode, remember to like and subscribe to the show if you haven’t already. Please share this podcast with three friends that could use this valuable information. Sharing is the best way to help me spread the word about the importance of grandfathers in the lives of their grandchildren and families.
