EP – 112 Growing Creativity with Grandchildren

Our bonus conversation with Dan Miller from 48Days

This bonus episode involves a great conversation with Dan Miller from the best-selling book 48 Days to the Work You Love.

Dan Miller joins us for a fantastic conversation about how to help our grandchildren to think creatively about education, work, and life. Learn about Dan’s experience and expectations when he learned he would become a grandfather. Dan was excited and viewed the grandchildren as an extension of the fun and exciting times he and his wife, Joanne, had with their children.

Our discussion then focused on helping his grandchildren learn to hold on to their creativity and passions from childhood to adulthood. We discuss how they use the game CASH FLOW as one of the fun activities he and Joanne use to help the grandchildren think about creating wealth.

We also talk about using mentors when modeling roles such as being a husband, father, and grandfather. There are many resources available to learn these roles that we take on. Dan and I also talk about how grandfathers or men of the same age group can help reframe experiences that our grandchildren and other youth have. We can help them to think differently about opportunities and find ways to find work that is meaningful, purposeful, AND profitable for them.

Dan talks to us about connecting with the grandchildren on their level and with their interests. By meeting the grandchildren where they are, we help them grow in how they are ‘bent’ or created, not how their parents or we want them to be. By joining our grandchildren in activities they enjoy, we as grandparents can learn from them.

EP – 101 Humor is Where the Heart is

Our conversation with Lee Gaitan

Had a bad bounce in life? Have you ever struggled to explain to a four-year-old grandchild that a cheese sandwich cut diagonally tastes EXACTLY the same as one cut down the middle? This week’s guest, Lee Gaitan, has had those same experiences.

My good friend Lee sits down with us to share her experience of being a grandmother, a mother, a wife, a teacher, and most importantly (in my book), a funny person. We discuss her reaction to learning that she would be a grandmother for the first time. Lee shares with us her story of running around an empty college building to find someone, anyone, to share the good news of her becoming a grandmother.

Lee and I also discuss the importance of pulling out the humor lens when looking at life’s everyday decisions and when you experience what Lee calls ‘a bad bounce’. We talk about the importance of writing down the funny and humorous moments in our lives as a way of passing on our story and our family’s stories of the good times, bad times, and funny times.

After you have listened to this episode, please remember to like and subscribe to the show if you haven’t already. It would also be fantastic if you would share this podcast with a friend. Sharing is the best way to help me spread the word about the importance of grandfathers in the lives of their grandchildren and families.

EP – 95 The Humor in the Everyday

Our conversation with Jerry Zezima

You must be a certain character to see the humor in almost everything. From remembrances of your own adolescent past to a baby’s first and very awkward steps to your daily habits, which you have done for years but can no longer remember exactly why you do “that.”

Well, Jerry Zezima is that kind of character. Jerry is the needed individual that helps us see the humor and, at times, the absurdity that makes up everyday life. I am excited that Jerry has joined our conversation to remind us that a surprisingly high number of humorous events comprise our daily activities if we only open our eyes to see them.

Jerry is a father of two incredible daughters and five grandchildren. In this conversation, we learn about Jerry’s reaction to learning for the first time that he would become a grandfather. Jerry shares an amusing tale of how his daughter was married a day before Kate and William’s (the British Royals) wedding. He decided to reach out to congratulate William and Kate on their big day and received a personalized response from the royal office.

Of course, another correspondence was required when Jerry’s granddaughter was born close to the date of Kate and William’s firstborn baby. This time, Jerry sent off a letter congratulating Prince Charles on joining the proud grandfather club. Though Jerry did not receive a personalized thank you from Prince Charlie, he did get an official postcard thanking him for his letter and well wishes.

Jerry, by occupation, is a humorist and some might even say successful at his craft. I happen to be in the ‘some’ camp. You will enjoy and chuckle with us as we discuss Jerry’s background and observations on being a grandfather. Few areas of life lend themselves to humor more than our interactions with young grandchildren.

After you have listened to this episode, please remember to like and subscribe to the show if you haven’t already. It would also be fantastic if you would share this podcast with a friend. Sharing is the best way to help me spread the word about the importance of grandfathers in the lives of their grandchildren and families.

EP – 87 Stories With Grandpa

Our conversation with Josiah Fogle

Josiah Fogle has created children’s books to help his children experience the vital lessons that John Fogle instilled in him. Josiah admired his father and was influenced by him through spending years as a family in the Philippines as missionaries. Through writing about Grandpa John, Josiah has built a bridge between his father’s legacy and Josiah’s children, who are learning about their grandfather through actual family stories and memories and impactful children’s books.

We continue our discussion and dive into the world of writing and publishing for both children’s books and grown-up books. Josiah is a Sales Development Manager with the organization Self Publishing School. You will learn that one thing that sets Josiah apart from many other people working in the publishing game is that Josiah IS a published author.

In our conversation, Josiah educates us on the different types of publishing available today, from simple ebooks to traditional publishing. We discuss the pros and cons of each publishing method and how many successful authors started their journey by choosing the self-publishing route. Josiah also discusses the many services that Self Publishing School has to offer.

All this conversation about publishing and the different options available to authors today will hopefully motivate YOU to jump into the game to create the story that only YOU can tell.

Once you have finished listening to this episode, please remember to like and subscribe to the podcast. Josiah and I would also be excited if you were to share this conversation with a friend who would enjoy our chat and who would also get value in learning more about writing and publishing a book.

Remember to leave a short note in the comments section below about what part of this conversation inspired you. Josiah and I would love to hear from you and what your “Aha moment” was from our conversation.
